  • Determine maternal/fetal hemodynamic status with systemic, noninvasive measurements.
  • Discuss fetal oxygen transport and fetal compensatory mechanisms.
  • Differentiate diagnostic criteria and management options for
    preeclampsia and eclampsia.
  • Discuss etiology and medical/nursing management of pulmonary
    edema and pulmonary embolism.
  • Recognize conditions conducive to excessive blood loss in pregnancy, labor and postpartum, estimating blood loss with increased accuracy and initiate appropriate response.
  • Describe principles, indications, administration and complications of fluid and blood replacement therapies.
  • Discuss the role of effective communication to reduce patient injury
    and improve outcomes on the perinatal unit.
  • Recognize FHM indicators of stress, distress and decompensation.
  • Discuss maternal and fetal implications of induction/augmentation of labor.
  • Identify current trends related to VBAC and cesarean on demand, noting the role of the nurse/CNM in today’s perinatal unit.
  • Discuss recognition factors and appropriate management of shoulder dystocia and umbilical cord prolapse.
  • Recognize complications of regional analgesia and anesthesia,
    including identification and management.
