COURSE DESCRIPTION

Sweet Success 2010: Diabetes & Pregnancy - Optimizing Outcomes... Keeping abreast of research fi ndings and the newest recommendations in care provision to Optimize Outcomes is essential and challenging for the busy health care provider. Providing best care in pregnancies complicated by diabetes requires knowledge to enhance education, treatment, and outcomes for this and future generations. This conference provides current recommendations for clinical practice in a framework that examines your challenges and provides strategies to meet them.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this program the participant will be able to:

• Develop an action oriented plan for a continuum of pregnancy care, preconception through birth; for prevention of birth defects, premature birth, maternal and infant mortality.

• State an understanding of clinical use of the insulin pump during pregnancy.

• Outline measures promoting positive behavioral response to diabetes management.

• Discuss the advances from research to practice and development of a prevention model of care for pregnancy complicated by diabetes.

• Detail implementation procedures for the ADA’s current guidelines for medical nutrition therapy for women with GDM.

• Describe current HAPO recommendations for clinical care in diabetes/pregnancy.

• Describe issues of pregnancy weight gain relative to fetal implications in diabetes management.

• Identify multifactoral elements between the medical, scientific and legal communities in determining guidelines vs standards and the effect on clinical care management issues.

• Describe evidence based screening, referrals and expectant management to optimize outcomes.

• Respond to the JCAHO Sentinel Event Alert by recognizing risks and implementing options to reduce maternal morbidity and prevent maternal mortality.

• Discuss the use of oral hypoglycemics and insulin in the care of diabetes and pregnancy.

• Identify the risk association of the children of GDM mothers for obesity and metabolic syndrome recognizing need for expectant management.

• Describe the education a woman with gestational diabetes experiences as she moves through the Sweet Success program from third trimester diagnosis to six week postpartum diagnosis.

• Describe the relationship between lactation and long term health in mother-child pairs with diabetes
